Tanning FAQ

Sunbed Tanning

A: You’ll find advice and sunbed tanning tips here.
A: When you’re on your back, we recommend placing your arms several inches away from your sides with your palms up and slightly bending your knees.
A: Yes. Always start with referencing the skin type chart and consulting the Tanning Experts®.
A: All PBT locations have a 24-hour tanning policy. Because the tanning process doesn’t stop when you leave the sunbed, your skin needs downtime to properly develop color. As recommended by the FDA, a 24-hour resting period between sessions will allow you to maximize your color and skin care.
A: It’s vital to use skin care products made for sunbed tanning before and after you tan. PBT offers an array of skin care products — from intensifiers to facial bronzers and more.
A: To keep skin moisturized and extend the life of your tan, you should use a tanning extender specifically formulated for sunbed tanning.
A: You do not have to wait to shower. However, bronzers that contain DHA are best when left on for at least 4 hours before showering.
A: It depends on many factors, including skin type, level of current tan, the tanning bed and skin care products you use. Typically, you’ll see results after 3-5 sessions.
A: The best things (including tans) can’t be rushed. Go to our Sunbed Tanning Tips page to learn how to get the most out of your tan.
A: Talk with the Tanning Experts® at PBT about building a tanning schedule tailored specifically to your skin type and tanning goals.

Spray Tanning

A: Check out valuable tips and advice from The Tanning Experts® on how to prep and maintain your spray tan.
A: You can just stick to your preferred shaving routine before you spray tan. However, for best results after your spray tan, we recommend waiting to shave for at least 4 hours.
A: Yes. Ideally, you should exfoliate before your spray tan with a product specifically made for spray tanning. Do not exfoliate after your spray tan until you are ready for your next spray tan.
A: Yes, but only use moisturizers that are specifically formulated for sunless tanning (i.e., oil-free). PBT offers an array of amazing skin care products to use before and after your spray tan session.
A: For best results, wear dark loose-fitting clothing and nail polish. Avoid wearing perfumes, deodorant or makeup that can create a barrier for absorption. Avoid wearing tight clothing and shoes such as boots, socks or tights, which may rub off some of the spray tan and cause uneven results.
A: Avoid showering for at least 4 hours.
  • Bathing: At least 4 hours.
  • Activities that make you sweat heavily: At least 4 hours.
  • Chlorine: Swimming in chlorinated pools will quickly break down your spray tan. We suggest avoiding entirely, if possible.
A: It varies. But with the proper skin care, a spray tan can last for up to 7 days.

A: It depends on the individual and how you maintain your spray tan. You can extend the life of your spray tan by following these spray tan tips or by talking with the Tanning Experts® at PBT.
A: For best results, spray tan 2-3 days before the event.
A: When you spot imperfections, the best way to get an even and flawless tan is to use the Sunless Black Label™ Remarkable Refiner. This revolutionary product reduces oversaturation, removes your old sunless tan and minimizes uneven fading.

Skin Care Products

A: Apply skin care products right before you get into the sunbed. We also recommend using a tan extender after your sunbed tan session. PBT has created a variety of skin care products specifically made to nourish your skin and maintain your tan.
A: Be sure to use an oil-free moisturizer specifically made for spray tanning before your tan. Using a sunless primer is a great way to hydrate, balance skin’s pH and enhance sunless results. Post spray tan, choose from specially formulated products like one of our tan extenders.
A: We strongly recommend you use only lotions formulated for sunbed or spray tanning. Some lotions not made for sunbed tanning can actually damage tanning beds. Lotions not specifically made for sunbed or spray tanning may not give you the desired tanning results and could cause your tan to fade sooner.
